We stayed 10 days in Sosua 26 Dec to 4 JAN. We saw plenty of the buggers BUT we used Coppertone Bug and Sun each morning, after every shower and every swim. We did not get bitten, and we did not get sunburned. Many other tourists we saw looked like lab experiments from their bites and burns. Bottom line- good defense.

Mosquitoes are usually in there greatest abundance when there is a combination of heat and rain. The summer months are usually the worst. Some people are much more susceptible than others. I've lived here several years and have grown a resistance to them. I no longer get a reaction when they bite me. If you take precautions than you'll have nothing to worry about.

There has been more rain than usual, so the mosquitoes have a better chance to breed. I use "Skin So Soft" oil, diluted with 5 parts of water. It works fine for me, but you can buy Repellents anywhere on the Island. Most Resorts spray so problem areas are fewer. An instant cure from any bites is ammonia (you can get these pencil sized tubes in most Pharmacies here) Come & have fun in the sun!!
