I was just wondering whether the tour companies will accept Canadian funds or only American?? We'd rather bring all Cdn. $ so we need to know if the tour companies will accept it.
We personally think the Canadian $ is the way to go to! But- When we went on the RumRunner's tour they would only accept American $. We have a webpage and if you click on Rum Runners on our page it will take you directly to them! I am sure you can email them and ask! There are also some pictures of our tour! Our Webpgae is http://foyfd.recorder.ca/trip.htm Have a great trip!
Don't take this an affront to Canadians, but from posts, Dominican acceptance for Tourist card, departure fees, it seems to be a whole lot easier just to change your CD to US prior to departure
When you are in the DR, you are expected to use their currency. There is the exception, of course, when exiting you must use US$. I would suggest that you exchange your $ for $RD when arriving. Don't exchange more than you will need. You can always exchange more later is you need to.
Canadians lose out too much in the exchange from Canadian to US dollars. I only take the $10 US for the departure tax (been there 10 times). It's better to change your Canadian dollars straight to Dominican pesos down there. I suggest you check with your tour company here (Signature or whatever) to see if you'll need US dollars to book tours.
I just came back from a two weeks stay in Juan Dolio. I was getting 9.5 pesos for one Canadian dollar and 15.50 pesos for one American $ at local exchange outlet. This gives an implicit exchange rate of .6129 for the Canadian dollar to the American dollar. I am sure you can get a better rate than that in Canada by exchanging Canadian dollar for US dollar (around .66 right now) and then once you are in the Dominican Republic exchange your US dollar for the DR peso or pay for your tour in US dollars.
Most tour companies don't accept CDN, best to have pesos or USD. Best not to exchange your money in the hotel lobby, as just outside the resort area, I found a much better exchange rate.
