Orphanage

I am a freshman at Connecticut College, and I am looking for a volunteer/internship opportunity for this summer. My special interests are in children, Spanish, and the Dominican Republic. I have had experience working with children with a variety of special needs, and I spent the summers of ’96 and ’97 working with Amigos de las Americas in rural communities in Latin America where I promoted public health and community sanitation by leading discussions and aiding in the construction of latrines. I would ideally like to work in an orphanage in the Dominican Republic, but I would also be interested in working with other types of organizations (and in other Spanish-speaking countries) that involve helping children. Ashley My husband and I visited an orphanage in Juan Dolio this past Christmas. The name of it is Cry of the Carribean. The facility its self was hit by the hurrican last year and they will be moving to Punta Cana this summer. It is run by a couple from Canada and seems to be very orginized. The children are learning a varity of subjects including several languages. I think as far as orphanages go this is a very good one. The man that is running the place is named Gord Zimmer. I think you could send something to him at Cry of the Carribean in Juan Dolio and he would get it. Good luck
