Higuey
Can someone tell me why is that this site does not refer to HIGUEY when posting the weather in the DR instead of PUNTA CANA. I do know that the DR map shows HIGUEY as the city or town in that area, not PUNTA CANA. But this site yes, does it refer to other cities as they are named for ex, LA ROMANA as it is not as BAYAHIBE.

Re: Higuey
Tom, are you a dominican citizen? I ask because as a citizen born in Higuey, I feel like if the city of Higuey has been discriminated. You said because the resorts are in Punta Cana, but what about other cities that have resorts also, and this cities are posted like they are named, La Romana and not Bayahibe or Puerto Plata and not Cofresi, so why it is that this site can not refers to Higuey like it shows in the DR map, HIGUEY. I believe Higuey has always been known for its big catedral of La Basilica and not for Punta cana.

Re: Higuey/Different "Tom"
Juanita:
I have friends in Higuey, in fact one was feeding me information from a sat phone during "Georges". I've always thought Higuey was one of the prettiest, cleanest towns in the DR.
Some people find that unless they are at an all inclusive manicured resort, seperated from the real world, waited on hand and foot, that everything is not "perfect."
I wouldn't worry about it, after reading this board for two years, it's the very first time I ever heard anything bad about Higuey.

Re: Higuey
Juanita:

Re: Higuey
I am staying in the Punta Cana area, Bavaro Beach Resort in Mar. 21-28. Will a trip to Higuey to see the Basilica be a nice day adventure?

To visit or not to visit Higuey ?
To visit or not to visit Higuey. This is a difficult one to answer.
My wife comes from a small village near Higuey, so I send quite a lot of time in Higuey when we go there (8 times already). The city is certainly not a town that has made efforts to attract tourists. The only thing that is really worth visiting is the Basilica. However, haven said that I must admit that it is the town that I prefer in the Dominican Republic, because it is unspoiled. It is quite dirty, there is not very much to see in terms of attractions, but it is the home town to very wonderful people. Take the time to walk down the small streets, look at the local businesses, eat the local cheese, go into a local colmado (grocery shop) and buy a presidente beer or a coca cola, go to the local market and buy some local fruit, watch them repair a punctured tire, change your dollars in the local Banco Popular (next to the central park), talk or try to communicate with the locals, have your shoes cleaned for 10 or 20 pesos by a small child, give the child a few sweets and your best smile. This will take and should make your DAY.

John, John, John, read your own words: "but it is the home town to very wonderful people. Aren't these more than enough reasons to recommend visiting this town that epitomizes the cultural wonder of the DR. This is how I spend most of my visits there. ...and as a side note, if you like and appreciate that child's shoe cleaning (with love and satisfaction) pay him enough to buy a brand new fully equipped shine box. It'll do so much for his yearning to excel, etc. etc.
Have fun and take the time to smell the flowers. It'll leave you with a lasting impression. Dominicans are a wonderful people.
