Default Pictures of El Faro de Colón

Where Can I find good pictures of El Faro de Colón, on the Internet? I-´m writing a short piece about this strange phenomena of the DR, and I really need a good shot of the Faro. Obviously it´s a bit too expencive for me to take the picture myself( I live in northern europe...)

Thanx...

While there are probably a lot of picture of the Faro de Colon out there on the internet, I found a good picture at the following sight

www.goshen.edu/~paulmr/dr.html

I was also surprised that this sight was within 15 mi. of my home.

It's also known as the "Columbus Lighthouse" and it's in Santo Domingo. It is supposed to house the remains of Christopher Columbus, however there's someplace else that also claims to have him (I don't know all the details...I'm sure DR1 could fill us in on that). You should be able to find a photo of it in almost any Dominican travel guide (I'm pretty sure there's a photo of it in Fodor's Caribbean guide).

The Faro is the monumental Lighthouse that the Balaguer government completed in 1992 to honor Columbus and his discoveries and to house his tomb (or mausoleum, depending on where you think he's really buried). It's a huge cross-shaped structure, located on the opposite side of the Ozama river from the old colonial zone, and it emits an enormous cross-shaped light into the night sky. It's become something of symbol of the city and is definitely worth a visit, not only for the tomb but for the museum and park that are part of the complex. Jorgen: check out the internet version of Santo Domingo's main newspaper the Listin Diario (www.listin.com.do)for a picture of the Faro at night (it's on the Republica page of the site). Hope this is helpful.--josgon

I'm curious now too. I've been to DR twice and returning again soon. What is this place?

The Christopher Columbus Philatelic Society might have some pictures that they can send over the internet. I shall try to put their address onto this message. There are many picture post cards and postage stamps that have been issued picturing this lighthouse. I am not sure that they will be of the quality that you need.I hope that this helps. Check the stamp society out and if they can not help let me know and I will try to find a nice picture to scan for you.
