Default 3rd World Country?

Perhaps this question is a bit naive, but...

Why do some refer to the DR as a 3rd World Country?

What exactly is the defintion of a 3rd world country? I always thought of an impoverished, starving place when this term was used.

Any true educated responses with no offense to anyone or this board please?

Thanks

Hi Kenney....check out this address for a definition and description of "Third World Country" that is far too lengthy to copy onto this message board: http://www.thirdworldtraveler.com/General/ThirdWorld_def.html

I don't consider D.R. a third world nation. I believe that President Ferna`ndez has moved the country forward in so many areas that we should use the term "Developing Nation".

I'm really glad to hear you say that, I believe the Dominican Republic to be a very burgeoning nation.

I don't think this is a poor country, the problem is that people don't prioritize, save money and work with order and discipline.

I've seen many people complain about how hard the economic situation is while drinking a 20-dollar bottle of Scotch whisky and wearing a pair of 200-dollar Nike Shoes and designer pants.

Believe or not the DR is in 3dr. Place in telecommunications in América, surpassed only by the US and Canada, I don't think many countries in the world have the kind of telecommunications infrastructure we have. How many countries have the kind of Internet connections and services the DR has web-TV, isdn and soon RED lines? No many countries I'm sure.

The definition of a Third World Country does not mean that a particular country is poor. It means that it is not Technological advance or develop. ofcourse they may use many of the advance things such a computers, cars, and so on but, it doesn't make those, many of those are brought from different country.

the definition basically of a third world country is one that has a lower Gross National Product per capita but has the natural resources and ability to greatly improve it's economic and overall situation. Third World countries are actually the ones that show the most promise and i'd hardly call that an insult. The Fourth and Fifth world countries are the ones that are very poor (and yes there are 4th and fth worlds)
