Diesel SUV in DR; problems? rewards? How? Why not?

I'm an American living permanently in the DR, on the north coast at the moment. I'm considerding buying a SUV [new; perhaps used] with a diesel engine; because the diesel fuel is so much cheaper in the DR. I'd like some advice from DR owners of diesel SUVs. Particiulary those who've owned diesel SUVs for more than 3 [somewhat arbitrarily] years. Advantages? Disadvantages? Parts availability? Reputable dealers? Dealers to avoid!! Prices vs. gasoline SUVs? Local mechanics competent? 4 wheel drive vs 2 wheel drive? Recommendations? What to avoid? Spcific makes: Japanese? Amercan? European? Best probable rpices - where? I welcome positive & negative responses? Would you buy diesel again? Why not? Thanks for taking the time.
