Default us citizenship

my friend who's pregnant and currently residing in santo domingo is considering having her baby there. she is an american citizen, and i am wondering what procedures she would have to go through in order to attain us citizenship for her child were she to give birth in santo domingo. is it a difficult process? basically, i am trying to persuade her to have her baby in the u.s. or at least be aware of what she'll need to do if the baby's born in santo domingo. any info. would be appreciated. thanks.

I dont know if the process has changed, but 10 years ago, on July 10th I gave birth to one of my sons in Santiago. I am a US citizen and what I did was take my son to the consulate in Santo Domingo with the birth certificate from the hospital. I signed a whole bunch of papers and I had to prove my citizenship with a passport or something like that. Anyway they issued a passport for him. They did question me if I was the person who really gave birth to the child. You know the usual b---s--- that goes on at the consulate. I had a c-section and I asked the guy if he wanted to see my scar. HA Ha! He refused and then believed me that I was the "real mother". I suppose he never got an anwser like that before.

take care
