Default Research in the Dominican Republic

Hello. I am a student at New York University. I have been trying to find information on groups and/or organizations that are interested in race identity and how people in the Dominican Republic view themselves as well as people in Puerto Rico. I have not been able to find any such organizations. If you can tell me of any organizations (even student ran organizations would be good) that are interested in any of the above issues or that are trying to promote a united identity or cause within the Dominican Republic I would greatly appreciate it. Organizations such as "Identidad Negra." I am also interested in speaking to people with opposing views. I am planning on going to both the Dominican Republic as well as Puerto Rico this summer so as to research these issues. I have been told there are organizations in both places that deal with both of these issues. However, no one knows who they are. So PLEASE, if you have any information at all and a way to contact some organizations, can you please pass it on to me as soon as possible. I have to make arrangements immediately. I would really appreciate it. I just don't know where else to turn to at this point.

Thanks in advance.

Sincerely,

Nakisha M. ncm206@is8.nyu.edu

I would also email Michele Wucker, who wrote another wonderful book on relations between the Dominican Republic and Haiti called "Why the Cocks Fight". Her email is wuckerm@aol.com, and she could tell you where to find these research materials.

Dear sister Nakisha. I wish to thank you for your interest in that particular aspect of our culture, the condition of our people regarding racial pride and self awareness is sad and deplorable, but there are possitive signs emerging recently. There is a brother who is very involved with organizations in the subject, if you wish to contact him let me know via email.

The best authors and books in the subject that I know of are: Dr.Jean Price Mars " La republique D`Haiti et La Republique Dom."

Dr. Hugo Tolentino Dipp. " Raza E Historia en Santo Domingo"

Good luck Abumario

Nakisha-- Since you're a student at NYU you have several very precious resources right in your hand here in NYC: 1) the Alianza Dominicana at 2410 Amsterdam Ave. They can be found on the web, just plug the name into search. Also the Asociaciones Dominicanos at the corner of 50th and Broadway; also and not the leat: the Schomberg branch of the Library in Harlem as well as the main research library at 5th and 42nd. I am as interested in the issue as you are and I make profuse of these facilities-- they're LOADED with facts, figures, books, articles in every media imaginable!! Hope to see you downtown [ or uptown, as the case may be!] DEE
