Default Cell phones

I read somewhere (don't remember where) that you are better off taking a cell phone to the DR because it can take awhile to get phone service. Does anyone know if cell phones purchased in Canada would Work or does it have to be a certain kind. Thanks for the help.

HI! I LIVE IN THE US, BUT ALSO HAVE A RESIDENCE IN THE DR. AND IVE BEEN THROUGH THE WHOLE PHONE THING! I BROUGHT A CELLULAR PHONE FROM THE US AND HAD IT ACTIVATED FOR USE WITH "TARJETAS" (PREPAID PHONE CARDS FROM CODETEL). YOU HAVE TO TAKE YOUR PHONE TO A MAJOR CODETEL OFFICE, I WENT TO THE OFFICE IN SANTO DOMINGO AT THE EDIFICIO CRYSTAL, BUT THERES ALSO A MAJOR OFFICE IN SANTIAGO. YOU HAVE TO HAVE THEM CHECK THE "SERIA" OR IN ENGLISH THE CODE PROGRAMED INTO THE PHONE. THEY ONLY HAVE TECHS TO DO THIS PART AT THESE MAJOR OFFICES. IT COSTS ALMOST NOTHING FOR THIS PART, LIKE 60 PESOS. WHEN YOU HAVE THIS PAPER YOU CAN HAVE THE PHONE ACTIVATED AT ANY CODETEL CALL CENTER THAT HAS A TECH. IVE HAD PHONES ACTIVATED IN SD AND LAS TERRENAS. IT COSTS 700 PESOS TO HAVE IT ACTIVATED. ONCE ACTIVATED YOU PICK YOUR NUMBER AND CODE. YOU BUY CODETEL CARDS AND ENTER THEM INTO YOUR PHONE AND IT FUCTIONS LIKE ANY PHONE, EXCEPT THERE IS NO MONTHLY BILL! THE CALL RATES ARE ON PAR WITH THE OTHER TYPES OF PHONE SERVICES IN THE DR. THE PLUS OF CELLULAR PHONES IN THE DR IS THIS. ALTHOUGH THE CELLULAR SYSTEM IS FAR FROM PERFECT, THE LAND BASED SYSTEM IS VERY WEAK AND SUBJUCT TO FREQUENT PROBLEMS, MORESO IN THE OUTLAYING AREAS. THE CELLULAR SYSTEM IS FAR MORE ADVANCED. TO GIVE YOU AN EXAMPLE. WHEN THE HURRICAN CRUISED THROUGH LAST YEAR, IN LAS TERRENAS WHERE I LIVE THE LAND LINES WERE OUT OF SERVICE FOR 3 WEEKS, THE CELULAR SERVICE WAS WORKING IN 3 DAYS!. ONE OTHER THING, IF YOU TAKE A CELLULAR PHONE THAT IS ACTIVATED IN YOUR COUNTRY TO THE DR YOU CAN CALL OUT WITH CARDS, BUT NOT RECIVE CALLS WITHOUT AFFECTING YOUR SERVICE IN CANADA. YOU SIMPL;Y DIAL 311 PRESS SEND, LISTEN FOR THE PROMPS IN SPANISH TO ENTER YOUR CARD NUMBER AND THE NUMBER YOU WANT TO DIAL! THIS WORKS GREAT, ONLY YOU CANNOT RECEIVE CALLS ONLY CALL OUT. I KNOW THIS MESSAGE IS LONG, BUT IF YOU NEED ANY MORE INFO EMAIL ME DIRECT. GOOD LUCK!

Default Long Message

This is just a suggestion, PLEASE refrain from using the caps lock key when typing your message. A post typed in all caps. is hard to read on most screens.

Thank you & Regards ...... CES

This subject has been discussed at great length. Check the message archives. In general, if your phone will work in the DR. You can use it with prepaid calling cards alone, or have your phone activated if you want to receive calls also. Note when you read the archives that the TRICOM CellCard is no longer available but the Codetel ComuniCard is the equivalent, no activation needed to place outgoing calls.
