Default Immunizations

I am going to be studying in Santiago for several weeks this summer. I leave here July 6th. I have tried to get infomation on immunizations- the most recent suggests Hepatitis A and Malaria pills. If you are in the DR or have been to the DR recently, do you think they are both necessary? I am a little late in looking into this... Any suggestions?

Dear Karen:

We live in Santiago. We had the Hep A & B shots before coming. We have never needed nor taken malaria pills. Our daughter did get Dengue Fever last year. However, malaria pills will not help or prevent this. I think you'll be just fine. Our medical is very good. I had a c-section here in the city in March. Although some things were different, I had great care. The experience was better than a c-section I had in the States. I hope this helps.

Im also Canadian, and my doctor said that there are really no immunizations needed. Hopefully you have taken medical insurance "just in case". The only thing you should really worry about is the water. It is not drinkable, but bottled water is sold everywhere. You should bring some immodium with you, but in case, the doctors there will give you something. Enjoy yourself!!!

hello!

I am an student from holland and I am going to the DR this summer. In holland I was told to take a immunization on hepatitis A (yellow ferver), this is a compulsory immunization in Holland. Malariapills are only needed when you're staying in East DR, near the borders with Haïti. In the rest of the DR (Sosua, punta cana, santo domingo, puerto plata, etc) they are not needed, because malariaflies can only fly less than 2 miles and they live only a few days.

bye. maverick

TIP: take 'DEET' with you. This will protect from getting the Denguefever.
