August in the Dominican

Can anyone tell me what the weather would be like in mid August to mid September. Can you still take place in all activities?

The weather does not vary much in the Dominican Republic year round, perhaps by 5-7F. There is a bit more rain in September and October.

Can anyone tell me about the Merengue festival in Santo Domingo at the beginning of August? Is it worth attending? Best bet for accommodation at this late date? Best way to get from SD to Port-au-Prince by road (car/driver, rental across border, or bus)?
