I'm sure this has been answered previously...if so, I missed it and I'm sorry...but, were 'secondary roads' effected by the Hurricane last year, for example, the road to El Rincon. It was a fun & difficult road to drive...is it still there? And, is it possible and/or advisable to navigate the roads from Sanchez around Parque Nacional Los Haiatises to Sabana de la Mar? Am planning to travel the east side of the island in mid August and would appreciate any help.
I'm not sure where you are headed, but in March I drove from Higuey, Alvarez, Hato Mayor, Monte Plata to Los Naranjos. It is definetly a 4x4 trip, deeply rutted roads, washouts and obstacles a car wouldn't do to well on.
There should be no major changes with the road to El Rincon as this area was not significantly affected by Hurricane Georges. It is possible that the ferry connecting Sabana de la Mar with Samana will be operating, permitting the transport of vehicles. I would be wary of driving in the area of Los Haitises, even with a 4 wheel drive as these roads have never been good, with or without hurricane. I think you will get to see much more if you take an organized excursion to the Haitises area.
