Default passport required?

What is the current status of whether you can travel to the DR from the US on your original birth certificate or you must have a valid US passport? Person will be traveling from San Juan by way of Miami to Santiago, DR.

They will not have a problem at all getting in into The Dominican Republic if traveling with an original birth certificate as long with their state picture ID (Driver license or Non-driver license ID).

Valid Passport is always recommended.

For more information contact your nearest Dominican Embassy/Consulate

Thank you Ray. When there is enough time to secure one, we will recommend to all to get the passport.

Hi Ray...its Richard from TA Tours. How are you? In addition, you are absolutely correct about the passport, highly recommended.

What if you have an expired passport and an old letter from the INS confirming your status as a US citizen???

You will probably get in with no problem, but just travel with your birth certificate & picture ID if you dont have a passport. Its better to have a passport, but before I got mine, I traveled alot with my birth certificate. The only problem I had was that my certificate was getting tattered.

Oh, one other advantage...on my very first trip, the police were trying to give me a traffic ticket and just like they do here in some states, they wanted to hold my drivers license until I paid the fine. I had the sense to know I would have never seen my license again, and it was my picture ID to get back in the states. So, I was able to just "pay the fine directly to the officers" ($12 US, more or less.) That is why I reccommend having a passport, but I would not hesitate to go without it.
