In Canada it is a bit different. They have a specific order in which they treat visa. Spouses first, fiancees second, and family last. Which means if you are married before starting the proceedings your spouse will get here a little faster than if you are only engaged. Good luck.

Just out of curiosity...Let's say you get a fiance visa, what is the next step?? Do you stay here and get married in the States or does your fiance leave the US (once he's here) returns to the DR and marry you there??? If your finace marries you here is he allowed to stay (legally) in the US while the process takes place??

1 Dominican Fiancé recieves K1 visa at consulate. They have 90 days to travel to US and marry you (the US Citizen) 2 Once you get married IN THE US ONLY then you file for an adjustment of status AOS. You also can apply for a work permit at this time. These papers take a while, but hey, at least you're together. It also may be a good idea to apply for "advanced parole" so that if you all need to travel out of the country (say, back to the DR to visit) then you will have permission. Without this, they cannot get back into the country if they leave. 3 Your new spouse will eventually get a special green card which expires in 2 years. Towards the end of those 2 years, you will go back for another interview so they can see that you have a legitimate marriage, and then if that's successful, your spouse will get a regular green card.
