After considering all the posts I think the best answer to the question of how tourism affects the DR, which is a broad question, is that tourism is generally a good thing, the benefits of which vary in the different sectors depending on where the tourist goes and how he spends his money. The locals benefit more if the tourists broadens beyond the guided tour path and spends money on local products, while investors in the tourism industry benefit more if the tourists uses it exclusively.
