PASSPORT or DRIVING LICENSE

I have a friend who will be traveling with me in September to the Dominican Republic (Puerta Plata). He has filed for a passport, but it may not be here in time. My question??? Is there someone who has traveled from the US to Puerta Plata recently without a passport. Is a driving license all that is necessary. ?

A driver's license is NOT PROOF of citizenship as told to my friend on HIS RETURN TO THE USA. He had no trouble entering the DR but was delayed about two hours at Immigration re-entering the USA! They will use the license as identity plus a birth certificate.

Of course a driver's license isn't proof of citizenship. You do not need to be a citizen to get one. Another point is to call and ask the airline what THEY require. It will do you no good to satisfy government officials of the carrier is not satisfied and will not let you board.

We just got back from Plata last week. We used a birth certificate and driver's licence and had no problem

Just wanted to add: Make sure the birth certificate is an original, government issued one (raised seal) and NOT a photocopy or hospital type.
