You should bring some cash in US$, travelers checks and credit cards. You can pay your hotel in travelers checks (you will get better exchange rate and less surprises when you get your credit card bill), you will need the US$ cash for some excursions and purchases, and use your credit card so you don't have to travel with much cash. You should have no trouble cashing travelers checks at your hotel, but you will need your passport.

DR1,

I went to Dom Rep last year and had trouble getting a cash advance with my American Express card. There was only one place where I could do that, so I had to travel from Barahona to Santo Domingo to get cash. Do you know if that situation has changed?

I also recommend travelers checks.

Thanks,

nikotyn

DR1 Re your comment concerning "better exchange rate using travellers checks". That may be true, if US to DR currency, however from Canada, if you convert to US first, that is Not True.

In my experience, Uk/Costa Rica/Mexico/ DomRep/US. The best rate vs conversion Canada/US/local, or Canada/Local was 1. Visa ( maybe Mastercard, I don't know) 2. Bank machine Exchange.

My preferences - Priority Numero ono- Have cash( US$) -wherever you visit en el mundo.,2. use Credit card ( mine Visa), or 3. withdraw from Bank machine,-- Of course always have some US travellers cheques as a back-up. Bill

I just got back after spending a month in Puerto Plata, and used mostly travellers cheques. You can exchange them in the hotels, but will get a better rate at at the bank or exchange office. The rate to convert Canadian funds to Dominican pesos was 9.40 in the hotels and 9.91 at the bank (this was less than a week ago so it shouldn't have changed that much yet). Depending where you'll be staying there are ATM machines too. Don't forget the 10$ American departure tax.
