Having recently returned from vacationing in the DR, I have these comments that I thought I'd share. In Santo Domingo, avoid the Hotel Ocean Front (haven't found an economic alternative yet in SD yet). In Sosua, avoid Hotel Centro and stay at either Palm Resort or JJ's for about US$25 per night. Spend some time in Santiago - it's beautiful - but make sure your Spanish is good! In Samana, avoid staying at Kiko's but choose one of the Casa de Huespudes instead, e.g., D'Merihe. At Las Galeras, stay at the Paradiso Bungalows - each of my recommendations are about US $20-25. Be careful on the road to El Valle - go very slowly especially if you are driving to the waterfalls...but make sure you go! And, lastly, I agree with Sammy Sosa - "I Love you, Dominican Republic :-)
