a tree in Las Terrenas

There is a tree on the beach in Las Terrenas that grows low and has big thick green leaves. I have a picture of it but no scanner to post it with. They are everywhere there, but when I asked people what it was called they simply said it was una mata. It has no flowers or fruit that I saw. Can anyone tell me what it is?

It sounds like an Uva de Playa. Does it have round leaves?

I agree, it is probably uva de playa (seagrape tree). It does bear a sweet berrylike fruit seasonally.

yes Mike, big roundish thick leaves kind of like catchers mits, and now that you and Natasha have named it I think you are right. I think I heard it was uva de playa before. thanks
