Default Groceries

I am travelling to Puerto Plata for 3 weeks beginning December 19th am wondering if anyone knows of a good, inexpensive place to get groceries. I have been to the main store in Puerto Plata but it is quite pricey. Thanks. Lorri

I found that Tropical Super Market... is one of the best. You can look at local products... first... as all imported products, of course, we have to pay the price. Jim is right... plantain and yuca is cheap!!! Happy grocery shopping! Noelle Sofy's B&B

Super Mercado Messon amd Supermercado Jose Luis. Both are a good size. Messon has more variety. Both cheaper than Tropical. Best shopping in Santiago at National or Polo. (15% cheaper and much more variety..National has 20+ computerized checkouts, Ace hardware supplies and a book store(mostly Spanish Titles) with escalator) By the way in Puerto Plata there is a new, modern bookstore(Spanish titles) on JF Kennedy just like a North American book store with popular soft and hardbacks, coffee table books, childrens sections etc on 2 floors.

Rent a car for a day and travel to Santiago, about an hour south of Puerto Plata. There visit the Supermercado Nacional (one of the largest in the DR and just like a supermarket in North America) and stock up on all your needs. Then purchase fresh goods in Puerto Plata supermarkets or markets.

Hi! Messons has a 2 for the price of 1 veggie sale once a week,we never miss it, also Geronimo's (uphill from Tropical) sells the same cheese as tropical but 1/2 the price. Bargain in the old street market for fruit & onions, potatoes. Go to the Friday market on the highway right outside Zona Franca (Watch out for fast & dangerous traffic! Good luck! Eat at the Javilla restaurant for a super Dominican meal for $25RD. Canadian Bob.
