Default Passport??? and Juan Dolio Area

I have had heard differring opinions on this -do US citizens need a passport to enter the DR or just a birth certificate and picture ID? Also any info you can send on the Capella Beach Resort in the Juan Dolio area would be appreciated. Thank you, K

Check with your airline. Regardless of the official requirements, you will not be able to board your flight without having what the AIRLINE thinks are the requirements.

This board lists the travel requirements at http://www.dr1.com/travel/English/Tips.html#anchor15409 (Citizens of the United States may enter with passport or with an original birth certificate and additional photo-bearing official document (such as voter's registration or driver's license.) Minor's may enter with only an original birth certificate). This can be verified by calling the Ministry of Tourism (1-888-303-1336) or by E-mail at domreptourism@msn.com.

See info about the Barcelo Capella Beach Resort (previously the Renaissance Capella Beach Resort) at http://www.barcelo.com/hotels/seleho_i.htm or by clicking on the link below.

I am from the US and had to get a passport, and had to show it many times entering, leaving, and doing certain transactions in the DR. I had "visa" confused with "passport" though, and I guess it is the visa that I didn't have to get.

You did not have to get a passport in order to enter or leave the DR. Friends have traveled with me to and from the Dominican Republic using just a birth certificate and drivers license. Many businesses will require foreigners provide a passport.

A tourist card is required. They cost US$10 and can be purchased upon arrival or often at the ticket counter or gate at the last point of departure prior to arrival in the Dominican Republic.

I don't argue. All I know is what was required of me. They stamp my passport every time, but they can't stamp my birth certificate.

About a year or so ago, the DR went through a period where they wouldn't take birth certificates I guess it was enforced sporadically) so American Airlines would accept a passport only Have not heard of any problems since

We are travelling to the DR in January. Passports not required of US citizens per State Dept. Only a birth certificate and picture ID necessary along with the tourist card for $10. We got passports only because we will be travelling to other countries in the near future. Have a great trip!

It doesn't hurt to get one. I kind of like having one. I got all these stamps on it to remember my trips.

When I went down there, the airline told me I just needed a birth certificate and driver's license, so I didn't get a passport. I didn't have a problem until I came back into the US, at JFK - the guy at the customs desk hassled me about it, saying that he could deny entry and all this. So just to avoid that hassle, and to have the nifty stamp, I will just get a passport for the next time.
