Re: Dominican Heritage
No. There is a local saying that we all have some African blood behind our ears. Merengue is a most celebrated contribution with the beat dating back to our African ancestry.

Re: Dominican Heritage
Yes it is true; Dominicans denied their African ancestry. Dominicans don't want to be reminded or told that we have some African in us. That is the truth. Unfortunately.

Re: Dominican Heritage
It is true that Trujillo and Balaguer tried to Whitewash the country, which denies both African and indigenous ancestry. One of the main problems in the country is the denial of the neglect of the darker uneducated people of the country. It has caused the world to not undertand how the country can have 65% of the people living in destitute poverty while a minority can spend so much money on things like the faro and the building for the world conference. The 65% of poor people may wrongly be assumed to be Haitians. The denial is consistent and will probably be a cause for dr1 to delete this post. The world opinion is that the country does not lack resources, but distributes the resources in an unjust way, focusing on the Haitians because it is unaware of the Dominicans who are neglected. We really need to work on this issue.

Re: Dominican Heritage
Isn't the us assigning a new representative to stop Haitian inmigration into the US?
Ohhhh!!, yeah, I almost forgot, the DR is the only country that doesnt want the haitians in it's territory.
I wonder why American sailors in the Coast Guard wear gas mask and rubber gloves when they are intercepting Haitan boats off the coast of Florida.

Re: Dominican Heritage
Most be because when Haiti invaded the country in 1822 Dominican tried to diferienciate themselves from the invaders. Before the Haitian invasion, the mayority of the Dominican population was European desendent, most of these people were forced to leave to Cuba, Puerto Rico and Venezuela (it explains why Puerto Rico's population is mostly light skined compared to that of the DR)

Boat People
"I wonder why American sailors in the Coast Guard wear gas mask and rubber gloves when they are intercepting Haitan boats off the coast of Florida. "
LS, I have to agree. CB masks and gloves are degrading to these people. The Coast Guard and Navy should train the 5" .38's, M-2 .50 cals and Sea Whizzes directly on all unidentified refugees headed toward the US. No one would ever find enough pieces to determine who they were, no one would admit to financing or operating the illegal journeys, and everyone would be happy, wouldn't you?
The prevention is for known TB in Haiti

Re: Dominican Heritage
If it is true that Dominicans deny their African ancestry, it is truly a shame. That kind of denial occurs all over the world, even in Africa. I saw some men from Tanzania that claimed that they were of 100% Persian blood, yet they were dark-copper colored. In Brasil, I've heard that you can have brown brown skin, and still not be considered black.
While some people say they have no Afican blood, others may "admit" to having African blood, but brag about not being 100% Africans. In the US, some of us Black Americans like to brag about having "Indian in us". (Personally speaking, I have a great-great grandmother who was Indian, but I am as brown as chocolate with the tightest, curliest hair you'll find inside or out of the African diaspora.) Black Americans have white blood as well, but that's something we DO NOT go around bragging about.
I do not understand why anyone would deny their ancestral heritage, no matter what it is. No one of us can help who our people are, or how dark our skin is- for these are things that the Creator gave us, and who are we to complain? I personally think that people should stop saying that they're proud of being whatever they are, when they didn't contribute themselves. I am glad that I am black, but I cannot say that I am really proud. The reason why I am glad that I am black is because I believe that people with melanin are blessed, and the more that you have the better. Sooner or later, and mark my words, everyone in the world will know how powerful melanin is!

Darwin's theory
Sia
If Darwin's theory proves valid, the darkest people will one day be the only people with the continuation of our destroying the atmosphere, but your existence will also be relatively short lived beyond that of the lily white

Re: Dominican Heritage
I think L.s' post illustrates this principle of Whitewashing very well. It is true that the Haitians are, in the majority, more of African descent, but it is not true that the majority of Dominicans were of purely European descent. The Dominicans were a mix of indigenous and European descent, European, indigenous and African descent, indigenous and African descent, European and African descent, and some were more purely European, indigenous, or African descent. The more purely European people considered themselves superior and were in position to dominated the others. The darker mixtures of Dominicans are still shoved under the rug, as you can see in L.s's post and are neglected by all other parties. This is one of the real social justice issues facing the DR and those associated with it.
