cultural questions

1) Does anyone know what the "children of Machepe" refers to exactly, besides the general population of campesinos?

2) On a map dated about 1955, in El Album de Oro de la Feria, I see that there is a secondary road from Samaná back down the peninsula to the north coast through El Limón and ending at Las Terrenas. That road is nowhere on my present day map. Could anyone tell me when that road was built and when it was abandoned?

2) I traveled that road on the back of a motorcycle in 1988 and it was in terrible shape. I have read in the newspapers over the last few years that there are plans to fix it up. I would image that little has been done to the road and it is a bumpy ride. Probably takes twice as long as going through Sanchez when traveling between Samana and Las Terrenas.
