48 POUND DOG

I will be moving to Santo Domingo in a few months. I would like to take my mixed breed dog, Shelby with me. She weighs 48 pounds which seems to be a problem. She will not fit under my airline seat easily. How do you get a large dog to the Dominican Republic? I've read that airlines won't take them in the summer months, which is when I'll be departing. If apartments "only accept small dogs" would they make an exception for a 48 pound dog? Has anyone had experience with bringing a larger dog to the Dominican Rebublic?

I brought a dog that didn't fit under the seat in June. Unfortunately, American Airlines and all other airlines were very firm about not taking him. I lived in Tampa and had to drive to Miami in order to fly via Aeromar. They fly from DR to Miami and they are a cargo plane. They also take passengers. No first class flying, seats are pretty tight, but they were courteous and cheap. Good Luck
