Driving a car

Do I need an international driver's license in the Dominican Republic and if so should I get one before or after I arrive there?

Both Hertz and National have accepted my USA drivers license w/no questions.

I think you only need a license to drive a commercial vehicle there. At any rate, most people don't care - including many car rental places. I've never been asked to show a license, but needed to leave an open credit card voucher and/or my passport until I returned the car.

I definately wouldn't worry about an international license.

YOUR REGULAR LICENSE WILL DO BUT THEY DON'T HAVE INSURANCE AND DON'T CARE ABOUT IT SO DRIVING IS NOT A GOOD IDEA. TAKE A CAB OR TOURIST BUS AND LEAVE THE DRIVING TO THEM. LESS OF A HEADACHE

Thanks Ron. When I was there over Christmas, I did just that;however, I am moving to the DR. Can't pay for rides forever. Maybe the solution is to get an older car that won't mind dents and scratches.

I went to the Dominican Republic 2 years ago and i tell you i was stoped 6 times in 1 day by the POLICE looking for money and thats not all after 2 months that i was home i got my Credit Card bill and they STOLED my NUMBER and used it to make Phone Calls and i rented my car from HERTZ
