Default A WALK AROUND SOSUA IF YOU ARE NEW TO THIS BOARD

If you are a recent visitor to this message board and planning a trip to Sosua you may find this little walk a pleasant way to spend a few hours. A great place to start and a favorite of both locals and tourists is at the entrance to the Waterfront Hotel especially when the sea is a little rough and the waves come crashing in on the rocks below. Take along a bottle of wine, cheese, thee and me or a couple of cervesas, water or pop. The view from here is really spectacular. From here walk up the street to the first road, make a left and about 20-30 metres on the left is the synagogue. I have never looked through this place of worship but I am told it can be arranged so if you are interested be sure to ask. Directly across the street are the ball fields. Saturday mornings are the best times to watch the aspiring Sammys. Continue walking up the street for about 2 short blocks and you will see Wilson’s Booth on the right. Here you can change money; send faxes or emails while enjoying a drink from the Hard Road Café next door. Turn right at the next street and about 50 metres on the left is Eddy’s Sports Bar a great place to watch international sporting events on big screens. Another 50 metres on the left is the City Hall,. At the end of the street is the main street, Pedro Clisante. On your left is Super-Super a large grocery-liquor store. Turn right and you are heading towards the beach. Go about 2 ½ blocks and on your left is Britannia pub, a hangout for many ex-pats. Here if you wish you could make a donation to the Sosua Kids Association, set up to help poor kids go to school. A couple more doors is Mamajuana, a fine Swiss-operated restaurant. Another block on the left is PJs restaurant an institution in Sosua offering good food, friendly management and a great terrace for people watching. A little further on the left is la Roca with a wonderful elevated terrace. It is one of the oldest and in my opinion quite possibly the best restaurant in Sosua. Go down the lane beside La Roca. On the left are many souvenir –shop casitas. Here you can haggle all you want. At the end of the lane is a large parking lot. Here you might like to make your way to the sea on the right and walk along the beach in the ankle deep water. This way you will avoid many of the honky-tonk type bars just back of the beach area which don’t particularly appeal to me. Along the beach you might stop and rent a chaise lounge (20pesos), have a drink, do a little swimming or photo taking. The beach is maybe 300-400 metres long and at the end you walk up a concrete ramp. Now you are in Charamicos, the non-tourist part of Sosua. Turn right at the first street, walk another 40-50 metres and on your right is Michael’s Pub. Unpretentious and unknown by most tourists, it offers a fantastic view of Sosua Bay and the beach. When you leave Michael’s and continue up the street immediately in the right is Atlantico, a fine restaurant for a night out. (50 pesos by taxi) A little farther and you are at the main street of Charamicos where you can shop in the Dominican stores. These are but a few suggestions visitors may enjoy. There are many more walks you can find on your own which you will no doubt enjoy. To see many photos of this little walk check out the Sosua Club on Yahoo.

Default Excellent post! Thank you!

Richard you are very articulate. This info is exactly what I have been looking for. I printed your similar post on Puerto Plata and will print this one as well. We will be arriving to the Playa Dorada area this Saturday (second time for the North Coast), and staying two weeks. We're looking more forward to a couple of days in Sosua than a day in POP. What would I expect to pay a Publico for a fare from outside of the Playa Dorada gates to Sosua? Where would you suggest I ask the taxi (or whatever) to stop? The Waterfront Hotel, the Super Super? I imagine this is a good spot to buy coffee, rum and vanilla to take home (Canada). We certainly want to spend some time in the town. Maybe we'll just go straight to Eddy's Sports Bar and take it from there!!!
Thanks again for this very informative post!

Thank you for your reply. I am pleased that you may find it of help. I would think that a publico from Playa Dorada would run you about 15-20 pesos per person. The way gas prices are in the DR I would think that would be about right. It would be no big deal if it was 20 (about $2.00Cdn.) Generally the publico would not go off the highway but drop you off on the highway across the road from the Texaco. There is a fruit market there and many taxis, you can't miss it. If you cross the street and start walking up the street to the right of the Texaco, you will cross the main street(it's thefirst cross street, Harrison's jewelry is on one corner). Keep walking straight. You will pass a super market on the right and a couple of hotels (Garden Ketti) is one. Cross the next street and keep going to the end of the road. That is where Waterfront Hotel entrance is. It is only about a half kilometre in all from where the publico lets you off. Enjoy Sosua. I wish I was there right now myself.

Very good post! I though think you are very wrong when you writes that Sosua beach is only 3 to 400 meters long. I would guess It's between 1000 to 1500 meters

You could very well be right Tor. In any case it is about a 15-20 minute walk from el Batey where I started on the beach to Charamicos where I finished. Maybe I had one too many Presidentes?
