You may want to consider getting an International Driving Permit just to be on the safe side.

As far as I've heard, if you are not driving commercieal vehicles, you don't need a license (at all).

Maybe this has changed (or was never true?), but I've never been asked for a license from a car rental place or from the police.

No license from what I can tell. Nelly rentals are good and are located all over the country.

Formally, license is required. It is however seldom enforced
or checked. It is recommendable to have it in order though, since
before you know it, the police could make a one-week campaign
over such an issue! They would then also check the car's
registration papers etc.

While on the subject, DON't leave registration papers in the car!
Unneccesary to furnish a would-be car-thief with ready-made
original papers as well...

The 90 day period I wouldn't worry about however! If the
police make a "campain", it's purpose would be to get
some of the worst ("unlicensed") dominicans off the street.

Some of the country-side drivers I see up here could easily
cause a major disaster if let loose in the city!

Warmest/Gunnar
