Default Please tell me it isn't so!

Headline: May 10, 2001..Presidential legal advisor tells it like it is.....

After reading this story, I thought I'd better make sure that I understood it correctly. Does this mean that the PRD intends to do away with the Republic and convert DR to a strangle hold single party dictatorship? I sure hope I am reading this wrong! Tell me it isn't so!

just another drop in the filling bucket.
a story missing is that former president jorge blanco has been liberated of all charges of corruption as if he had never done a thing(only could read the headline and not the story yet).
another thing is:everything is being named after peña gomez.
peña gomez airport formerly aeropuerto int. las americas, autopista peña gomez formerly las americas highway

only a question of time when there is a peña gomez hospital, plaza peña gomez in every city and a new president changing his name to peña gomez.maybe even renaming santo domingo in ciudad peña gomez.sounds famliar?
el jefe manda saludos!!!
it's time to start searching for a new home.

The story I meant was the one about the political party speech saying they would change the constitution and other laws to make absolutely sure that their party (the present one) remained in power.

Nothing new : back home this same thing is done, especially by Republicans, every 3 months: meet up for some "golfing weekend" at a wellguarded location, flown there by corporate jets, meeting with BIG tobacco, industry lobbyists and special interest PACs. Now, I guess, the Hunt brothers and other big oil / chemical industrialists must have joined in. There they make the deals, launch new kartels and make sure they consolidate power. In the DR politicians do it more openly. The workings of democracy (a free, critical press and academia, the courts ) can insure we know about it and the corrupt are caught and punished.

Yes Bobs...I had not missed the analogy to the Republican Party in the States...I just didn't put it in the message, you're certainly are right on target....;-)).... Hopefully, the present president will follow in the footsteps of his family tradition and be a one-term president, but I'm not counting on it...they have lots of people over here so totally snowed that he'll probably get re-elected for another 4 year term.

Dear Hillbilly--

I didn't check out your *rant below* until after I had posted mine...when I did read it, it certainly made sense to me.

Also what is this about Berlitz? I have certification in the Laubach Method in tutoring illiterate students to learn English and also certification in the Laubach Method of (ESL) English as a Second Language, but haven't used them in several years.

I am exploring the idea of a relocation to the DR (I'm retired), but do not have any set plans so far and had been considering the North or East Coast since I'm not fond of living in large cities ...visiting them is fine though....;-))....

Thanks--Sharon
