Help needed for business visit next weekend!!!!
Am coming to the Dominican Republic next weekend on a business trip. Unfortunately I have been stuck with organising the accomodation for three of us, all guys, the company gives a budget of up to $85 per night (not much). Can anyone recommend anything in Santo Domingo.
Where would be a good restaurant for entertaining potential business contacts and for going out in the evenings?

I am supposing that that is->>>
$85 x night per man..
I think that the Hotel Cervantes(686 8161; or the Napolitano (687-1131-up to 39); or the Hispanola(221-1511), and lastly the Plaza Florida (541-3957), well maybe the Hotel Comodoro (541-2277).Will fit the bill.... these are all respectible places-I've stayed in all but the Comodoro, relatively inexpensive-and near enough to most business places.
As for going out? On $85 for hotel and entertaining, you might get hotdogs on the malecon....But i expect you do have an entertainment budget...try Vesuvios on the Malecon- One of the oldest and still excellent. Near all of those hotels. So too is the Asadero Argentino, but i hear they are getting pricy...
Might be better to ask your invitees where they want to eat...
For Chinese there is the Buen Sabor-fast noisy and cheap! But good.

Hillbilly !! Back it up there partner'...
Where is Buen Sabor located? I am in need of a good hot n' sour soup & egg roll fix and will be in the Capitol this comin' week. By the way, Hotel Plaza in Naco is also convenient and decent and has a guarded and roofed parking garage, and is in the price range.
And Hillbilly, now that we're speaking of egg rolls, why haven't I found the chinese restaurants offering that "five-second take your breath away mustard" offered with the rolls? Is there a secret handshake that brings it out? Thanks in advance!

Buen Sabor is located up on Av. Mexico
After you cross Dr. Delgado and are just above "Little China". There is a big sign outdoors.
As for the 'wasabe' yellow mustard sauce that is basically dried horshradish and water, I have never even seen it except at a japanese friend's place in Santiago.
You might ask for "Picante" but that will be red hot sauce.
You can find this at Chinese places in the States and bring it with you...ie. the dried preparation....
I agree on the Plaza at naco, too.. Neat place, but if these guys are on an $85/day budget??

Re: Help needed for business visit next weekend!!!
La Casona Dorada is a great little gem located on Avenida Independencia. It easily falls within your price range and is in a great location. I've stayed there on two occasions. I have also stayed at the Hotel Cervantes. It is OK but I give La Casona Dorada higher marks for appearance, location, & price. I do not recommend Buen Sabor as a restaurant for a business meeting. They do offer good food at a nice price, but it is often noisy, messy and chaotic, much like Ave. Mexico itself. I do like HB's recommendation of Vesuvio as a good place to have a business meeting. You won't be displeased. The number for La Casona Dorada is 809-221-3535. Best of luck. Antonio

Re: Help needed for business visit next weekend!!!
Many thanks for all the suggestions. This is an important weekend for me as I'm hoping that it will lead to three years of work in the Dominican Republic. Sorry that I haven't got back earlier but the server here in Saint Lucia has not been working!
Once again many thanks it is much appreciated.
PS the $85 is per person just for the accomodation.

Re: Help needed for business visit next weekend!!!
Try Hotel Dominican Fiesta -It's your best bet. $US65 corporate rate including breakfast. By the way the Vesuvious is one of the most expensive restuarants in santo domingo. Try Davy Crocket, Spagetisimo or Coco's in the Zona Colonial

Re: Help needed for business visit next weekend!!!
Is that $85/night per person or for all three of you. Is that a per diem that includes meals or do you get reimbursed for that. I was there a week ago and got a good corporate rate (1 person) at the Hispaniola Hotel, very nice, toward the top end, for $56/night. I don't know how much it would be if you squeezed 3 people in one room but you might come under the target figure. there are a number of good restaurants and bars at the hotels and surrounding area including in the the Zona Colonial. I was also taken to a really good local seafood restaurant in a nice neighborhood in outlying Santo Domingo called Sullys. Never had better seafood and pretty reasonable considering the service and the quality. Hope this helps.
