Mosquitoes
Sorry if this is old hat but to my wife this is important......Are mosquitoes a big problem in DR? We are booked to go to Punta Cana in August and she is getting paranoid. Is there a "season" for mossies, or are they an all year thing? I have read a lot about DEET based repellents, but my better half is more worried about the number them rather than trying to fend them off?.......sorry to be repetitive.

Re: Mosquitoes
Well Mossies arround all year long. During the rainy season there are even more of them! I guess you will have them to in Punta Cana, but perhaps the breeze will keep them off a little bit!

Re: Mosquitoes
I have been to Punta Cana twice in August and once in July. Only once were we bothered by mosquitoes. That was the last trip in August. I had read messages previously that described this problem and we did take along repellent, but I wondered why. On our third trip, at dinner, I knew why. We had to leave our dinner table to go back to the room for the repellent! That took care of it and no more problems. That trip, we had problems twice. Both of these times, there was no breeze at night. Maybe that's why you usually don't see/feel them. Take repellent with you. You may or may not need it, but you'll be glad to have it. We plan on going back again this August, also.

Re: Mosquitoes
the higher the deet the better, they are attracted to blue for some reason.so no blue jeans etc.try and bring liquid repellant it is better, last longer, muskol is very good usually has 100 per cent deet.put it on before you dress because the mosq, picks you up by infar red this hides you like stealth tech, the order has nothing to do with it,the only smell that repells them is if you quit washing about christmas for your trip in aug.and have a goood one.

Just like the immortal words of Ogden Nash..
God in His wisdom
Made the fly:
And then forgot
To tell us why!
Mosquitos are always around. The major hotels- 0 yes Punta Cana etc-always carry out spraying but there is no way to get rid of them all. Besides, what would the frogs and lizards have to eat?? Or the dragonflies?
Best bet is to get a good repellant, and use it as a matter of course. I have found that a good sunscreen is also effective, at least at the golf courses....

We had a young girl like this last year about this
time...She survived.
The Panther
by Ogden Nash
The panther is like the leopard,
Except it hasn't been peppered.
If you should behold a panther croutched,
Prepare to say "ouched".
If called by the panther,
don't anther.
Lizards are wonderful creatures, there to eat all the bugs. Some are green and some are even blue. Some change colors according to the background. They are all scaredy cats and will never bother anyone.
We have tree frogs, and bull frogs. The tree frogs are endemic but the bull frogs were brought from Belgium to eat mosquitos.
Dragonflies (Libelulas)just feast on mosquito larvae. In West Virginia we called them "Snake Doctors" 'cause they were always around places where snakes lived-next to rivers and ponds. BUT, there are no venemous snakes here....
So do come with your bride and have fun, don't be a scaredy cat....
