Default Degree in Tourism

Tourism degrees seem popular in the Dominican Republic. What is it exactly? A business management type study? Is it a 4 yr. degree?

There are tourism studies and there are hotel studies. These vary from two year programs to four year programs. There is even a masters in tourism studies. Universities to contact are the Pontificia Universidad Catolica Madre y Maestra, Universidad APEC, Universidad Catolica de Santo Domingo, Universidad Iberoamericana.

Default As far as i know-->

The degree offered by PUCMM at the Santo Tomas de Aquino Extension in Santo Domingo is a degree in Hotel Management and Administration, quite similar to those offered by Cornell or UNLV.
It is my considered opinion that degrees in "tourism" are just a hokie way to get money from gullible students.... Sorry, but I am old-fashioned...In the beautiful language of the Internet: WTF is "tourism"?? explain it to me as a subject worthy of a degree...

Hotel Management and Administration is a well known and very well regarded subject for university study. The problem is that not all universities can offer this degree because it is long and hard and expensive for the student and the university...So degrees in "tourism" are offered....Guess who gets the good jobs and who gets to muck out kitchens or drive taxis for the rest of their lives???

Another rant from the ol'

Here in the States you find either degrees in Hotel Management and Administration, degrees in Leisure Studies, or Parks and Recreation. I love the B.A. in Leisure Studies (it was a four year degree but it took me six years because I was taking a laid back approach. )) Well, these can be serious degrees and can have serious students but a solid degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in "tourism" or "hotels" will probably open more doors. I have to agree with you, Hillbilly!
