Carhire or buying a car ????

Hi there,
I'm coming to the dominican republic in oktober for about 3 months. During my stay I will probably need a car. What would you suggest....hire one or buy one and sell it when I go back.
Do you know what is the cheapest ???? How about the insurance ?
Do I need an international driverslicense or can I us my dutch driverslicense ???

Cars are expensive here--to buy or to rent. Depends where you will be and how much you plan to go where the public transportation can't take you. Going town to town is cheap and regular, transportation within Santo Domingo is great once you figure out the Carro Publico system. Unless you are lugging great loads of stuff from one spot to another, I'd stay away from puchase/hire.

Cheapest is to use public transport, the OMSA buses, conchos or motoconchos.

Another option is to befriend several radio taxi drivers, so you keep their telephone numbers (many have cell phones) and call or book them for your errands. If one is not available, another will be. These cost about RD$60 with a/c and RD$50 without a/c.

Probably the lowest cost of a reputable car rental agency for a month lease would be around RD$10,000 for the smallest car. You should get full insurance, and even pay to insure the deductible.
