Default How is the DR in August

I'm traveling to the DR in 3 weeks and I'm not trying to stay on a resort, is there any good hotels to stay at were you can meet locals, and enjoy the nightlife? I'm a single male with a limited spanish vocabulary will this hurt me?

I will really recommend a beach resort! If you want to stay close to Santo Domingo where you can enjoy the night life, i will recommend Coral Hamaca Beach Resort in Boca chica Beach. This way you will enjoy a nice beautiful white sand beach and also the great night life activities in Santo Domingo. Or i also recomend Melia Santo Domingo in Santo domingo, but this hotel is not All-Inclusive like the Coral Hamaca. Trust me, stay at an all inclusive resort and i promise that you will get the most out of your money!

I think you should stay local being that is very dangerous to travel every night to Boca Chica. you dont want a resort, it looks like you are more interested on clubing and hanging out in the city. Unfortunately I cannot suggest a hotel in Santo Domingo cause I've never been to one, but I am sure the other folks can.
Good Luck!!Have fun!!

I recommend the north coast, Sosua/Cabarete area. Nice towns, lots of english speakers and spanish speakers alike. Great beaches, windsurfing/boogie boarding/kite boarding (they just had pro-am competitions for windsurfing and kite boarding here a few weeks back). Great golf if you like that kind of thing. Plenty of tours to waterfalls, caves, mangrove forests...Lots of little pubs, restaurants, etc...

check out hispaniola.com, it may help.
See you in the DR!

Rich; Boca Chica is a nice little resort town, although I disagree with David totally, Yes you can get more for your money at an all-inclusive, if you just want to hang out at the Hotel continuously, but if you are the type who likes to go out an about and go out at night and party....you will be paying twice for every single beer or piece of food you consume! An all-inclusive is great for one who want to take in all the stuff the hotel has to offer(and in some cases this could be enough for yourself......it really depends on the individual, I've done it both ways plenty of times and enjoy going out) I've stayed at an all-inclusive and not had one single drink there( sounds stupid.....I know, but I really like the location of the hotel and the size and comfort of the room, so I pay for it. I know it's not too economical, but what the hell.....I'm on vacation, and thats what we want!!! E-mail me and I would be more than happy to give you any details you might want...I've went as a single male before I was married many times as well, so I know some info for the single guy as well. You can e-mail me at the above e-mail.....or at douglisa18@hotmail.com. talk to you soon!

Default Once you are in Sosua

Once you are in Sosua, you have it made!! Rather than try to describe where to go in email, I suggest the following.
Go to a pub on the main street (#13 Pedro Clisante) called the Brittania Pub. Ask for Barb, Linden, or James. They are co-owners of the pub, all are Canadian, and they love to help people like you find what they need in town.

From the best place to exchange your $$, to buying cigars or tours, they will steer you in the right direction. They also have terribly cold beer waiting for you when you arrive

Rocky's bar is also a good hang out to meet english speaking locals that will not give you a bum steer. This is located just off Pedro Clisante near Harrison's Jewelry. The owner there is also Canadian, and his name is Mark.

Good luck. If you need anything else, drop us an email.
