Toronto Caribana 2001
Hola everyone,
Just wondering if any of the DR posters are going to be coming to the Caribana celebrations this weekend in Toronto. It is going to be a blast!

Re: Toronto Caribana 2001
I live in Toronto and never go. The reason, there is no represntation by the DR. Usually, Trinidad, Guyana, Jamica ect. Sorry, but I cannot relate to these islands.
No Puerto Rico, Cuba, DR, sad.

Re: Toronto Caribana 2001
Don't you think that it's time that the DR gets representation then?! They are part of the Caribbean, aren't they?! Where are all the Dominicans in Toronto? Let's garner some support and at least have some representation for 2002!!!

Re: Toronto Caribana 2001
It seems to shut out all the Spanish speaking Carribean islands, such as the DR, Cuba,Puerto Rico. I have gone in the past, managed strictly by Jamaicans, Trinidadians, some from Barbados, ect. Sorry these people are not my cup of tea. They might be nice, but like I said cannot relate to them

Re: Toronto Caribana 2001
I am not a do gooder. If there was not money in it for me I wouldnt even bother. These type of events are not well funded and the only ones who benefit are the hotels, restaurants, and the Toronto businesses along the route.

Re: Toronto Caribana 2001
I have not looked at the message board in months but a friend of mine told me about the negative tenor of some of the Caribana postings. So, I decided to check them out for myself.
I'd like to know what's your basis for saying that the Spanish speaking islands are shut out? I've been going to Caribana for many years and do see Dominican flags there but never a Dominican float. As to your comment, about "these people are not your cup of tea" that seems to require some personal introspection on your part. I'm not even going to comment any further on the negativity of this statement. If there is prejudice in your heart, that's between you and God. I've also attended carnival in Santo Domingo. It can't even compare to Caribana's beauty, joy and organization.
I seriously doubt if you'll find any Puerto Ricans living in Toronto because they can live in the states. However, there are enough Cubans/Dominicans living there to participate in the festivities.
In my opinion, all Caribbeans have a common bond, it's called the Caribbean even though cultures do vary per island. Your country certainly fights for inclusion when it comes to policies affecting Caribbean countries.
