Default Info from DR1 news...

Reported in DR1 daily online news Friday Aug. 3, 2001:

"Dominican version of “Survivors”
Telecentro, Channel 13 has announced it will produce a Dominican version of the successful US TV show, “Survivors.” The local version, “Operacion Hispaniola” will air from mid-September to mid-December. The channel is looking for 16 participants who will be grouped into two “tribes” of four men and four women each and will have to survive in a natural area that can only be accessed by sea.
TV cameras will follow the participants 24 hours a day for 40 days. The “survivor” will receive a cash prize of RD$500,000. Others will receive prizes depending on how long they withstand the challenges. Every week one person will be eliminated from the contest.
The station says the project has the support of the ministries of Armed Forces and Environment. A team of 60 people, including TV technicians, doctors, nutritionists, and psychologists will follow the participants.
Program segments will be transmitted three times a day, and there will be a weekly summary.
Participants must be 21-50 years old, know how to swim and pass a physical examination."

Default Survivor DR-style

I agree that so-called Reality Shows are spreading like a disease across the world. They give Western potato-couches the chance to see what life is like without SUV's, cellphones, laptops, Nasdaq, CNN and free Internet porno. Living in DR is as good as any Survivor type of show. I suggest they send any of the winners of those shows to DR to see if they are worth their money. Would you bet on them passing these challenges:

 Drive around Santo Domingo for one day.

 Take a "Voladora" from Santo Domingo to Montecristi without having a heart attack before reaching Navarrete.

 Eat "fritura" in Villa Mella without dying from "unidentified chronic bowel disorders".

 Take a "concho" in Ave. Independencia and get the driver to stop within 2 kms. of their intended destination.

 Find an address anywhere in DR. Bonus points given if they find it after asking a Dominican.

 Survive an August night with a 12-hour "apagón".

 Take a "motoconcho" without fainting after a few minutes drive.

 Spend a day in Boca Chica without having to buy something from beach-vendors.

 Listen to Hippy's inaugural speech without having a stroke.

And finally....

 Drinking one properly chilled Presidente without forgetting/forgiving all of the above.
