Taxis are available around the clock. Guaguas, vans that are filled to overflowing, charge RD$20 from PP to Sosua and RD$10 from Sosua to Cabarette. You don't have to change from one to another to get from PP to Cabarette. Public cars charge RD$15 from Sosua to PP and RD$7 from Sosua to Cabarette. They put 2 passengers in front seat and 4 in back. However, you can pay for as many seats as you want, so, for example, if you want the front seat without being crowded, pay double. In the case of the cars, you have to change to go from Cabarette to Sosua. The cars that run between Sosua and PP have a red sign on the roof: Sosua/Puerto Plata. The cars that run from Sosua to Cabarette, and beyond, have a blue sign on the roof. Changing is no problem because the cars from Puerto Plata to Sosua drop you off where the cars from to Sosua to Cabarette depart.

I take a guagua to and from Sosua to PP everyday. I also motoconcho from PP to Costambar each day.

Guaguas (minivans made for 12 that seat 27)are 10RD from PP to Sosua, 5RD from Sosua to Cabarete, or 15RD from PP to Cabarete (non-stop with in flight service and little drinks with umbrellas...NOT!). They run to 7:00pm (officially) after which time you must take a publico, which is the little cars made for 4 that seat no less than 7 down here as described in the previous post.

Publicos cost 15RD PP to Sosua, 10RD Sosua to Cabarete, and I am pretty sure you need to transfer in Sosua. After 7pm the price goes up by 5RD for each of the above.

Do not take a motoconcho on the highway between any of these towns, for this is certain death. Motoconchos within Sosua are 5RD anywhere within the town during the day, and 10RD at night. Be sure to barter prices with the conchos BEFORE you get on. For the guaguas and publicos, just pay when you get off, don't ask a price or you are asking to get ripped off.

Guaguas and publicos are crowded, and you get to know your neighbor pretty well. They drive too fast, and sometimes you even get to share a seat with some chickens...which I think is pretty cool. By the way, if you only pay the actual price (as listed above) on the guagua, they will give you a hard time...if you pay the prices KenDP listed they will give you less of a hassle. Just don't pay more than twice the price listed above.

Final note: All guagua (legit ones), publicos and Motoconchos have identification numbers. If they hassle you or try to rip you off, ask to see their id tags (for the guagua/publicos...the motoconcho id's are a license plate right on the bike). That will usually end the debate, because if they are reported as trying to rip off a tourist they will have their license suspended and may even face some jail time (I think...help on this one?).

good luck, and viva public transit on the north coast!
