Default education in DR?

How do the Universities teach future teachers to teach?Do they teach them different strategies to teach subject matter or just the memorizing names an dates approach? Do they emphaze visual or creative approach to teaching concepts?

Are there guifted programs or magnet schools within the public school system?

Also, I know here in the US, a set of stardadized objectives are given by the county to teachers. Teachers are expected to follow this guideline and have students perform these objectives by the the end of the school year. Is there a similar system in DR or does a teacher teach by its own judgement?

You ARE kidding aren't you...
Magnet schools.....gifted programs.
Many teachers have no University Degrees; many have never been to the University.
We are talking about Public Schools.

ECH,

Do you know if any of the Dominican universities have yet set up degree programs to provide the equivalent of a US degree in education, and if so, how good/bad they are?

I recall tha a very sharp Dominicana friend of mine a few years back (1998) wanted so badly to get an education degree and teach high school kids in the DR. She checked all the SD-based universities, found none with a true education degree program to speak of (I believe that she told me that one had a program on paper, but was offering no courses and was missing profs for key courses). She was so discouraged, she instead applied to go to university in the US for the educ. degree. Still swears she'll return to teach in the DR, and I hope she does. She'll make a great teacher.

Are the DR universities still neglecting this field?

I hope not. If the DR ever hopes to bring its education system up to par, it must teach the teachers as well as the students.
Best regards,
Keith

Although several universities comprise a number of graduate divisions, there is a degree of utilitarianism to its components as befits a university in a developing nation. There are, however, few or no conventional academic disciplines besides chemistry, engineering, economics, mathematics and law and medicine.
Education is totally out of my field and I do not claim to be an expert or even knowledgable. Maybe "Hillbilly" can make some comments if he is addressed. He is certainly the most competent on this forum to answer the questions.

My wife who has a degree in Education and another in Statistics will be sending her paperwork to the British Columbia teachers association (CANADA)shortly and we'll soon know if they think her degree's are worth anything. She attended University of Santo Domingo. When we have an answer I'll let everyone know what they think here in BC about the DR Education system.
