Default Tarantulas & other Creepy Crawlies

Hi, guys. I was looking at a photo tour of the Dominican Republic and amongst the cows and butterflies were big, hairy tarantulas! Are these ugly things a problem? Do they get into your house? What about other things that go bump in the night?

I have lived here for 7 months now and not seen one. We saw a dead one, and know some kids that go out and catch them for fun! There are plenty of them around, but they tend not to like to visit with people too much.

There are all kinds of critters here to keep you company at night, and during the day. From ants, to cockroaches, spiders, snakes and tarantulas...Not unlike most countries. Obviously less of these in the cities, more in the country, it's part of the charm!

If you are staying in a hotel, you won't really encounter any of this. If you live here in a house, you will get all kinds of chances to spray your can of RAID/Plagatox around the house!

I heard that there are trapdoor spiders, too. Are there? Geuss I'll need a few cats to guard the castle.

I think it all depends on WHERE you're talking about. It's nature, and Mother is very particular as to where, when, and why she puts certain things in certain places. As far as I saw during my summer stay in NE DR, all I saw were a few small lizards. Or maybe I wasn't there long enough - and didn't travel around very much??? Anyway, Shannon - don't let it scare you off!

Just put on some anti-mosquito stuff, some anti-sunburn stuff and
enjoy the fun in the sun like all the other tourists! (Please don't drink the tapwater, which is much more dangerous than the other creepy-crawlies.....) Canadian Bob

The only real creepy crawlies here are the POLITICIANS. And believe me.....they are a bunch of creeps. And things that go bump in the night....is only someone trying to boost your car. Other than that, great place to either live or vacation.

These posts are really funny. In the spring we get a occasional sand crab and the dog can't figure them out because they walk sideways......... as far as the rest goes use "off" on your ankles when walking on the beach at dusk and do not worry anout any creepies !
