Default passport

I'm told that your passport must have at least 6 months remaining on your return from holiday before you leave I was
looking for info on this as my local passport office is closed

If coming from Canada, you don't need a passport to get into the DR...driver's license and birth cert are adequate. I THINK it is the same for US travellers, but I am not sure, especially in light of recent events. I have never heard of the 6 month thing you have mentioned.

There are several countries that have the requirement that your passport not expire prior to 6 months from your expected departure date from the country. This changes with time and our state department recommendation has been for us to check directly with the embassy of the country in question. This has not been a problem for travelers to the DR from the US or Canada because they really do not require a passport. Drivers license and birth certificate has always seemed to work. Another way to verify the entry requirement of a country is to ask the airline that you will travel on as they will know the requirements and will verify that you meet them before letting you on the plane.

I hope you enjoy your trip to the DR if it is really possible to enjoy anything at this point in time.
