Default Is Gazcue area safe to live? Is house safe?

Hi, I'm preparing to move to the DR and my husband is currently there scouting places to live. We found a house in Gazcue, close to the palace, that was very nice. It had a tall, stucco fence around the perimeter with gates for the cars and entry. It also had bars over all the windows and doors. However, several Dominicans have told my husband that they would not recommend living in a house as it's not safe. One lady told my husband that she absolutely wouldn't live in a house with small children (which we have 2 of) because of safety reasons.

Anyone living in Santo Domingo, can you tell me how safe it is? What's the main safety concern? Is it just being robbed or do we need to be concerned for our health? Please tell me what you can as I don't want to risk the safety of my kids. Thanks.

Default Gasque has to be one of the better areas

It is close to everything, it is well patrolled by police.
if you have a fence around the place a nice big dog will keep the normal creeps away since they are terrified of large dogs.
You will probably have help-that should be somewhat screened as much as possible- and you can also get private watchmen.
This question would have been ridiculous a few years ago, but sadly now it is logical..

Good Luck

Default Gazcue .....

I live in Gazcue for 6 years now and never had a problem! And we have no bars on the windows! But to say so, we keep a watchman 24 hours a day! But as previusly mentioned, big doogs will do just as good!

Default Re: Is Gazcue area safe to live? Is house safe?

Hi there. We live in an apartment in Gazcue, and have a friend with a great house in the area where you are planning to rent. He is dominican, 3 kids, and they really like the area (actually, they are moving to Canada, but they lived in the house for years). I feel safe here (much safer than, say, Mexico City). We have been here a year, without incident. I think that Arroyo Hondo is much less safe, as that is where all the really rich folks live--therefore, more crime. Of course, you have to use common sense...

I live in Arroyo Hondo above the Zoo. I don,t believe that there is more crime here.Criminals know that "punishment" here is swift and severe! Criss
