The DR is known very well for its ball players, but I am not sure that fits into your list of qualifications. Although I am sure Sammy Sosa wrote something down at some point in his life, he is better known and loved by his fellow Dominicans for how many homeruns he hits.

I am drawing a blank on names of Dominican intellectuals, and writers. Not to say that there aren't any, I just don't travel in circles that discuss this kind of thing.

There are several musicians on the island, and I know that at least one (some?) are known internationaly. The names escape me, perhaps someone else can list them for you. I think Criss travels in the same circles as Dominican intellectuals, musicians and writers, perhaps he can help out

Good luck with your research.

I am surprised Dolores, Hillbilly and others have not answered. I suspect Hillbilly would like you to do the dirty work for yourself - that's right! You know the drill, going to your university library and actually doing something called scholarly research. For starters, if you want to go the easy way out, you can "research" this topic in DR1's archives. You will find a lot of messages discussing Dominican culture. You can also do an Internet search and you will find what you are looking for. Those who have responded by writing that there is no culture in the DR either know nothing of what they speak about or are trying too hard to be funny...and may I add that they have failed :-) Happy researching!!!

Regards, Natasha

P.S. Santo Domingo is not called the Cradle of the Americas for nothing. Likewise, UNESCO did not proclaim Santo Domingo as "The City of Cultural Heritage of the New World" for nothing.

Manuela Dies was a well known Broadway/hoolywood Actress, dead now. Juan Luis Guerra well know singer and song writer. Pedro Mir
is a poet(Un Pais n El Mundo) Juan Bosch was a writer as well as a politian. I'm sure with a little research you can find more. It all depends on your perspective/definition of culture.

Candido Bido is a painter known internationally (for the sarcastic people I'm not talking about a house painter).
Juan Bosch is one of the best tales author (if not the best).
