Jeff, follow the advice of the doc, and also having a contact once you're there will really help. Something to remember is you get what you pay for, so if you rent a really cheap place you probably won't be able to sleep (loud radios, motoconchos, etc)
Don't be to concerned about racism, hell, there's racism in the heart of Africa. Before you react try to understand people's meaning and intentions, as they may call you Negro(neh-gro) or Cocolo(Black dominicans with english surnames from San Pedro de Macoris)if you are very dark, but it's not with dirty intentions. Negro is a common nickname given to the darkest of the litter. Oh, another thing, you are going to be mingling with the real dominicans, so the smiling faces may not be as common as in the resorts, and since you don't know your sorroundings you have to excercise more caution, just like in any other country.
