Used to visit DR with creditcard and AMEX travellercheques. Now I only pack my creditcards and ATM-cards (all issued in Europe / all with either Cirrus/Maestro or Plus-logo) Absolutely NO problem anywhere the island. You can find the ATM nearest to you through the link (click on "ubicacion de cajero" or use (Cirrus/Maestro) ATM-locator at http://www.mastercard.com/sg/atm/index.html. Found that Popular (www.bpd.com.do) charges less for transaction.

Default WATCH OUT for Banco Progresso

I used an ATM in Sosua last Friday to withdraw money. The ATM did not give any money but my account was debited the full amount. I reported it immediately to my bank in Canada but as of yet I have still NOT had the funds credited back into my account.

Traveller's checks have always been the answer to these problems for me. I have never had the slightest problem in the money exchange casitas when I present an American Express traveller's check. No ATM problems whatsoever--no eaten cards, no nothing.

man that sucks! There are stories like this in the archives about the machines here. From what they say it could be a long time before you get your money back...sorry to hear about that.

I have used ATM machines in the Middle East, Africa, DR and USA. I have had only one problem in close to 20 years. That was in my home town but not at my bank. I was told that all ATM transactions go through a clearing house and the fine print in your banking agreement says that they have up to 60 days to credit your account. My problem took 30 days to correct.

Been to Sosua a lot of times. Never used anything but atm's, and never had a problem.
