Mr. Joaquin: no monopoly ended Dominicana de Aviacion, and no other airline was responsible for landing Dominicana on Category I or even your Venezuelan Airline in Category II. The end of Dominicana de Aviacion was CORRUPTION! And anybody who flies an airline on category I should be beaten with sticks.

I was here when the Air Dominicana landed "on Fire", burned in half on the runway, the 2 halves were towed behind a hanger. Thanks to God no one got killed. The papers said that the plane was not damaged, the passengers even got their luggage back! Bad news is No News in the DR. If you have a death wish ,buy a ticket. It will become a souvenir, you pay for a ticket, they take the money, planes never fly! This is like a re-occuring nightmare here in the DR!! Criss

Default Onatrate del Aire

When I was a kid (not long ago) there were some buses in Santo Domingo from ONATRATE (Oficina de Transporte Terrestre) that were just pieces of junk on wheels. People used to call Dominicana de Aviación "La Onatrate del Aire". One wonders...

At least with ONATRATE you paid your fare and got somewhere, even if you ended up with both of your backpockets cut off by a pickpocket and smelling like a Haitian , but with Dominicana you could end up falling from the plane toilet into a Dominican pig farm mudpile. Their tickets were as good as Loteria Nacional tickets(a donation to your friendly senator to buy a jeepeta)

Those DC-9's bring back memories. The first Dominicana jet was a new DC-9 that they got around '68. Soon after that, I decided to empty my Royal Bank account to the last centavo and go to PR for a few days to hang around with my buddies. Landing at SDQ on the way back we heard a big bang! They didn't tell us what it was but I think the baby blew a tire.
A couple of weeks later and a few minutes after taking off to PR it took a plunge right off Punta Caucedo, taking with it an entire purtorican volleyball team. It was kind of sad, one day I saw some of those girls buying souvenirs around Mercado Modelo, the next day they were gone. After that it was only Pan Am for me. To my recollection I don't think that bird was on service more than six months.
