Default Going to live in DR and in need of a house

My most sincere condolences go to the Dominican people in this difficult time.

I feel that my request is quite heartless in a time like this, and I'd like to assure everyone that, although I've never lost anyone in a plane crash, I know what it feels to lose a loved one unexpectedly.
Now, on another matter, I am going to live in DR for 3 to 4 years some time in mid 2002. However, before I move there, I want to look at the country and make sure that my kids (2 minors) like it. So, we are going to spend our Christmas holiday in DR and will be staying there for 3 weeks. I would like to rent a house (furnished, 3 bedrooms) for the duration of my stay. If I do accept the assignment, upon return in October 2001, I will rent an unfurnished house/appartment. I would like to know if anyone knows of a reliable and professional, business-minded real estate agent that could find me a house within my budget (US$1500 -$2500) for the 3-week vacation. I have tried contacting Remax and Century 21. While one (Remax) told me that they only work with clients looking for something in the North, the other (Century 21) didn't even bother replying to me. Meanwhile, I've looked through every DR-related website, and couldn't find any listing of property for rent in the Santo Domingo area. The house does not have to be in the city exactly, it could be in any town outside of Santo Domingo. But since, most likely, we will be living in the capital (if we do come back), I'd rather be in the surrounding areas for this first time as well. I have looked at the aparta-hotel option, but would prefer the flexibility and freedom of a house or apartment.
If anyone knows someone willing to rent a furnished house for 3 weeks, please let me know through this message board or contact me via e-mail at "Nomad_of-DC@hotmail.com". We have lived in most parts of the world and in some quite unstable countries, so we can adjust to the DR reality, whatever it may be. However, safety, cleaniless of the house and well-functioning appliances are indispensable. I'm willing to increase the budget a bit, if the house warrants a higher fee.
Sorry for posting such a cold note in the middle of this tragedy. My heart is with all of you and I hope to get to know the Dominican people better, when I do live in their country which, apparently is beautiful.

Also, if anyone has tips for foreigners coming to DR to settle-in and suggestions on pitfalls, I would be grateful for letting me know.
Looking forward to hearing from anyone who can be of help, and again, my most sincere condolences to the nation.

Warmest regards,
CP

Default How strange!

It is strange that Remax told you that, they have many offices in Santo Domingo. Try calling Remax Metropolitana at 809 541 2020.

Disclaimer:
I am not a Remax representative. I am not endorsing them neither do I get any commission from them (darn!). This is straight out the phone book.

You probably contacted Remax at Sosua who are singularly unhelpful unless it produces an income for them. Do as Pib suggests & ring Remax in Santo Domingo. Try going on to the REmax webpage & set the webpage for Remax Santo Domingo from there!

I am MORE than confident you will find something in your price range - Good Luck.

We want to apologise for the response that you received from one of our representatives. Although we do not attempt to sell properties or service in the south part of the country, we always refer our clients to one of three Remax offices in Santo Domingo. By the way, we do get income for referrals. That's our business. Sorry again for the inconvenience.

I suggest a good hotel here in the capital.Houses have their share of problems, such as,no lights,no water,no cable TV, no "air",no telephone,no security,no maid, all at once,or in combination.A hotel will have all the above plus a pool. You can get a car,and day trip,to see the area. You don,t want to be in a house when there is no water in your area for 4 or 5 days. I know how to find a water truck to fill the cistern, but you don,t.Also a large security deposit may be asked for, that might be dificult to recover.Good luck.tommy
