We are a homeschooling family who is need of some information for a Spanish class we are taking. We are discussing the flag of the Dominican Republic. What do the colors mean? What does the insignia mean? Thanks in advance.

Default There should be an article at

zonacolonial.com.
However, just in case

when the Trinitario Movement were forced to proclaim Independence in 1844, it was from Haiti.
the Haitians in turn had obtained their independence from France.
the French flag was Blue , White and Red. the haitians took out the White (for obvious reasons) and kept the blue and red,
Whe the Dominicans proclaimed their independence they did not have a flag of their own so Juana Saltitopa took a haitian flag and put a white cross on it. that made it Blue White Blue across the top, a white middle and red, white, red across the bottom.

this was later changed to Alternate Blue and Red, with the blue being on the top nearest the flagpole.

The white field is supposed to be 1/2 the width of the blue or red field. The official flag has the Dominican Coat of Arms in the center. the maritime flag flown on ships does not have the coat of arms.

Hope this helps. Click below for a look at the coat of arms and flag

I usually tell people to their own howework, but I kind of wanted to know this one myself! Go to www.google.com, and search for Dominican Republic Flag....you'll find all kinds of info, including what I found below, at http://www.1uptravel.com/flag/flags/do.html

don't know how accurate the info is, but the site looks pretty solid.

Quatered with a white cross, first and fourth fields blue, second and third red. Origin of colours is from Haitian flag. It was officially accepted on 1844.11.06.

This plain flag is flown by private citizens both on land and at sea.

State flag

by António Martins, 29 Jan 1999

On government and military flags there is the state’s coat of arms in the middle of the cross.
Zeljko Heimer, 12 Dec 1995

The government of the Dominican Republic adds the national coat of arms in the center of the cross. This emblem is similar to the flag design and shows a bible, a cross of gold, 4 Dominican flags and two spears on a pattern from the flag. there are bracches of olive and palm around the shield and above on a ribbon is the motto "Dios, Patria, Libertad" meaning "God, Fatherland, Liberty." The blue is said to stand for Liberty, red for the fire and blood of the independence struggle and the white cross is a symbol of sacrifice. Below the shield is another ribbon bearing the name of the country "República Dominicana".
Dave Martucci, 12 Oct 1999

This is acording the presidential decree of 1913.
Jaume Ollé, 14 Nov 1998

Default A little insignificant note

>>>with the blue being on the top nearest the flagpole<<<. In time of war, which we never actually had, this should be the other way around (red on top nearest the flagpole). It took me a long time to memorize that when I was a kid in school.

Those Japanese kids surely have it easy. I have been pondering for years how can their "rising sun" flag be hung the wrong way.

You seem to have a problem understanding simple matters. For instance you could not understand about the Cayman Island situation. Now it is difficult for you to figure out a flag with a white cross and red and blue. It might help you look at the shield. Can you possibly figure out if a shield is upside down?

The red color is suppossed to stand for the blood of the martirs that made the dominican republic a reality. The white cross for the religious foundation of the DR; read catholicism...As for the blue I forgot what it stands for...Anybody remembers?
