I also would like to visit and want to know which part of the island is best for Diving in Jan?

Also it would be nice for some night life.

Night life = Santo Domingo, hands down.
Diving? Now I'm not sure. I was supposed to go last time down but fooled around and didn't do it. I hear that one part is really bad but another part is excellent. Can anyone help?

Punta Cana has some great areas to dive - a few shipwrecks and some caves. The nightlife is hit or miss, depending on which resort you choose. Bavaro has a better nightlife scene, in my opinion, and is pretty close to punta cana. That might be a good choice. Both places can be pretty touristy.

My absolute favorite place on the East coast is the Punta Cana Beach Resort, because of their ecological research center and park. They have a PADI dive center on the premises, but the nightlife there may not be what you call "jumping."
