Default A QUESTION FOR EXPATS

i would like to get the comments of foreigners living in DR, or those that live abroad, but are thinking about moving to the island.......what makes you wanna live there permanently?
is it lower costs? weather? freedoms? what?

it is obvious that natives emigrate the island looking for a "better life" and "oportunities", but why would you want to live in a country where so many people(poor people) wanna leave?

are you guys rich?

just out of curiosity.

Me..I love the people here. In general their happy and it doesn't take money to be happy. I was concidered below poverty in America and was happy..but cold..here I can be warm!! I concider live to be an adventure and this is the biggest adventure I've had yet! I lost many friends and almost some of my family..my mother said she is taking me out of her will because I chose to move here...but hey! its not my money anyhow so no big deal.I will stay here and I will survive..never had visions of wealth anyhow..
Don;t know if that answered the question...don't really know if there is a concise answer other than I love it here and my dog seems pretty happy also!!

For me, it is climate and lifestyle, at least as I interpret it. To some extent ”adventure”, even if that wears off quickly once you get to know a place.

The friendliness I have met from my new friends there is important! However, friendliness is a relative commodity and will bounce back on you, if you show it first, whatever country you are in!

Europe, for me, represents stress! The biggest health problem in Sweden nowadays is burnout! I hope to be able to live at a slower, more human pace in DR.

Similar to El Jefe, I hope to be able to retire at an early age, and live in comfort on savings and, later on, retirement funds from Sweden. Should I find a decent job that I enjoy, then that will of course provide an opportunity for some extras!

The fact that Cecilia lives in DR is of course not entirely unimportant…

I am not there yet but I want to live in the country on a farm and enjoy a simple quiet life in a warm climate with a low cost of living. DR is my choice largely because my wife is dominican.

Hey, does one really need an excuse to go anywhere? In your case, with the sex capital of the world, Bangkok, only a few hours away, you prefer to go to the DR. Surely you have your reasons.

Concerning weather, though, I have been in Saudi Arabia (Dhahran), and the weather there can be quite nice this time of year, even dipping into the 40's (yes, Fahrenheit) at night. (In all fairness, I believe you said Jeddah, which is farther south and probably warmer).

No such luck in the DR. Even today it is warm and muggy, and it won't get much better. Most of the time it is pressingly hot and humid. Even Sweden has more comfortable days than here, no contest (although admittedly, not right now).

Yes, the DR offers a lot, but I'm always amazed when people mention "weather". Why the need for fantasy?
