I just realized that my next travel date into Las Americas/Santo Domingo is Feb 27, Dia del Independencia ... anything special I should be aware of? Thanks for your help.

It will be your last day to catch the La Vega Carnival for sure. That particular Sunday is the last day the Diablos Cajuelos go out on the street without their masks, wearing colorful hats designed purposely for their costume. You will be able to tell which one gave you the bruise in your rear end with the whips. This is the best place to be in DR on those two days.
